About the Business

Transmission operates under licence as Scottish Hydro Electric (SHE) Transmission plc, responsible for the transmission of electricity in the north of Scotland. We own and maintain the 132kV, 275kV and 400kV electricity transmission network in our licence area. Our network comprises of underground cables, overhead wooden poles, steel towers and electricity substations, and it extends over a quarter of the UK land mass across some of its most challenging terrain.

What is the Role?

We are looking for an experienced economist to join our team to play an important role in the delivery of our commitments in our next price control period, RIIO-T2, and lead on economic analysis required to assist the close out of the current price control, RIIO-T1.

With their extensive experience in economic and financial analysis, the economist will play a crucial role in the assessment of regulatory and policy issues in relation to the RIIO price control framework through information gathering from inside and outside the business.

The economist will lead the delivery of large, complex economic analysis modelling projects in relation to investment appraisals.  The role will involve significant engagement with both internal and external stakeholders (regulators, government, industry groups etc), presenting our position and keeping up to speed with regulatory and industry developments.

The economist will also advise the senior SHE Transmission management team on regulatory, economic and policy issues, including how regulatory issues may impact the business in terms investment decision making via economic modelling assessments.

What do I need?

This role requires a high level of technical competency, good written and oral communication skills, well developed people and stakeholder management skills, and a track record of delivery against challenging deadlines.

Demonstrable experience within an economics-based role in a corporate environment is required.  Particularly, an understanding of the energy industry gained from past combined with knowledge of price control based regulation of utilities is highly desirable.

Ideally you will have a degree in economics or equivalent experience applying economic analysis (competition economics and/or regulatory economics) to business, regulatory and policy problems.

Experience of leading and delivering solutions that involve any of the following specialisms: econometrics, economic impact, market/regulatory reviews and policy evaluation is essential.

You will be highly numerate with extensive economic modelling experience with the ability to balance strategic, big picture thinking with analytical ability and attention to detail.

As a commercially minded individual, you will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and are able to put together clear and concise arguments, advice and presentations that are tailored to your audience. Moreover, excellent time management and multi-tasking skills are required to carry out this role effectively.

As an influential person, you will have skills of persuasion in producing impactful regulatory submissions.  Therefore, you should be capable of building and maintaining a network of contacts across the business and have experience in stakeholder management
