Our Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Cable Design Engineer to join our Strategic Investment Cable Team based in our prestigious new premises in Reading, One Forbury Place, conveniently located in Reading town centre.

The Strategic Investment Design team carry out the design work for new cable installations, replacing existing circuits, new electricity connections, increasing the size of customers’ existing connections, installing generation, and moving equipment for third parties. We’re here to help whether our customers are carrying out industrial development, generation development or an independent distribution network. Our responsibility is to respond to challenging changes in our licence obligations, and growing levels of competition.

As an 11/33kV Cable Design engineer, you’ll be responsible for the design of a number of capital projects from initial high-level scope, cable route feasibility including managing legal, environmental consents, cable system design, Electrical design and outage planning.

You’ll also look after financial analysis and forecasting and assisting with the construction and closure phases. This will include working in a team to manage the Construction, land consents, Quality Assurance, public relations and tender management.

Your Skills and Experience

Ideally the successful candidate will have experience in the Project Management of cable schemes up to either 11kV or 33kV. A minimum HNC in a relevant subject is preferred, in addition to experience in this field with a DNO or a supplier to the industry.

Excellent communication skills are essential and previous experience in applying the Construction Design, and Management Regulations 2015 to technically complex projects would be highly advantageous. There will be a requirement to work to tight timescales and provide first class customer service at all stages of the project; therefore, the ability to thrive under pressure is essential. It’s also important that you have an eye on long term development and can identify and implement innovative and effective business improvements.
