Salary: SSE09 £45,079-£59,538 depending on skills and experience

Permanent | Full Time Hours with flexible working patterns available | 37 hours per week

Our Role  

As part of the Metering and Smart Transformation (MaST) business, SSE purchases and installs smart meters. The Technical Solutions Team is responsible for developing and testing metering systems, comprising of electricity and gas smart meters, local comms (Home Area Network), remote comms (Wide Area Network), In-Home Displays (IHDs/PPMIDs) and interfaces to Consumer Access Devices (CADs).

We’re looking for people with electricity and ideally also gas metering or IHD expertise. You should have relevant knowledge of the national programme for the installation of smart metering and practical and technical experience of electricity supply metering for domestic and commercial premises in the UK. This includes knowledge of metering standards and metering arrangements. You should be able to demonstrate your ability to work closely with colleagues and with external organisations to develop smart metering solutions for SSE. A relevant and recognised technical qualification is essential, as is your ability to demonstrate a solid understanding of safe working in a laboratory environment.

You'll assist in developing test scripts for the testing of meters. This will also include recording results, investigating exceptions, and raising issues. You’ll support internal test teams who need to use smart meters for the testing of smart systems or processes, and you’ll work with internal teams responsible for field operations to help with resolving technical issues. Furthermore, you’ll help produce training materials on the technical aspects of smart metering equipment.

You'll also assist in producing test strategies and plans, whilst supporting procurement activities and taking responsibility for other associated projects. You’ll be the technical interface between SSE and product manufacturers which will help ensure defects are managed appropriately.

Although based in Thatcham, occasional travel will be required to our offices in Havant, Treforest, Reading and other locations.

Your Skills and Experience

The successful candidate will have a suitable higher education qualification in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (HNC/HND/Degree/Masters) or related discipline and be able to demonstrate:

- Experience of working in a consumer product development environment and production of business cases

- Project Management Skills

- A good working knowledge of the features and functions of Electricity and Gas Meters

- A clear understanding of complex electrical wiring diagrams

- A basic knowledge of industry proven technical test and validation techniques.

Ideally, the successful candidate will have:

- Experience of Smart Metering and an in-depth knowledge of SMETS

- Experience of HAN connected devices

- Knowledge of industry proven technical test and validation techniquesExperience in producing test plans, test scripts and closure reports

The following are desirable, but not essential:

- ISTQB qualified to Foundation Level (as a minimum)

Personal skills and qualities will include accuracy, attention to detail, a methodical approach, the ability to problem solve, excellent all-round communication skills and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office.
