Lead Real Time Systems Engineer

Location: Reading

Salary: Up to £65,458 depending on skills and experience + car/cash allowance

Permanent | Full Time Hours | 37 hours per week


Our Role

The Real Time Systems team has the responsibility for design, installation, testing and commissioning of the systems deployed in substations and other electrical plant locations, as well as the operational communication solutions in support of these systems.

You will manage a team of highly technical engineers, providing a service to operational teams and project teams. These engineers will manage the day to day operations of the Real Time System network ensuring the network operates safely and effectively. You will ensure plant and equipment operability, providing guidance and advice to projects from inception through to handover to Operations. You will manage quality reviews of projects in terms of the plant and equipment installed and sign-off handover of equipment to RTS Field team. You will also ensure all plant and equipment information is recorded and added to the SSEN asset database.

You will play a key part in helping to shape future strategy in the specialist areas of Real Time Systems, working closely with the policy teams and Technical Authorities. You will ensure you keep up to date with changes in technology and specifications and help to shape the scope and design of systems used for the management of Distribution Network. You will also have to develop training courses and materials for developing your own specialist team as well as general courses for non-specialists within Distribution.


Your Skills and Experience

Due to the technical nature of the role, you will have demonstrable experience in a similar role, fulfilling responsibilities as outlined above. 

Familiarity with some or all of the following technology would be advantageous: Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), UHF Scanning Radio (planning and deployment), TCP/IP, UDP, DSL, ADSL, TSAT, BGAN, APNs & VPNs, GSM + UMTS + LTE networks, PAKNET, VRRP, Point to Point Radio, IP MESH RADIO, DNP3 + IEC61850 & EWISP+ Protocols, Fibre Optic Networking + Copper Cable Networks, PCs and Control Systems (SCADA), HMIs, and IEDs.

Further to the technical requirements, in order for your application to be successful you must be safety focussed, able to display strong written and verbal communication skills, be comfortable dealing with stakeholders at all levels, both internal and external. You will be capable of managing teams as well as multiple projects and resources across a number of sites. As such you will need to be commercially minded with good analytical thought processes and possess good problem solving skills. You will also have to be self-disciplined with excellent organisational skills, capable of working on your own initiative and to deadlines within high pressure environments.

Experience of managing teams, projects and programmes either in a utility or engineering environment. You'll have a proven track record of managing teams and 3rd party partner companies to deliver and exceed targets.

An in-depth understanding of the price control challenges facing the Distribution business and the need to exceed targets within a regulated, incentive driven, business environment is essential.

The role will be office based in Reading however the role will require regular travel to substations, sites, supplier locations and other SSE offices as required so a full driving license is essential.
