Public Affairs Manager
Competitive salary plus bonus and benefits.
SSE is one of the biggest companies in the UK with 20,000 employees and around 10 million customer accounts. And due to internal growth we are looking for an experienced Public Affairs Manager to join the Corporate Affairs team based in our London office. The purpose of Corporate Affairs Directorate of SSE is to take responsibility for protecting and enhancing SSE's reputation so it can achieve sustainable business outcomes and has group wide responsibility for government, parliamentary and political engagement, policy development, corporate reporting, media relations and other external corporate communications. Along with employee communications and events and sustainability strategy development, policy and engagement. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and proven Public Affairs professional to join a commercially focused organisation dealing in complex public policy matters and focused on sustainable growth.
You will lead SSE plc’s public affairs work in Westminster and shape the external political and policy environment. You will do this by focusing on commercially valuable issues and helping to run campaigns which deliver material commercial outcomes and represent the views of shareholders, employees and customers, and wider society. You will use your specialist knowledge or information to devise, plan and implement public affairs strategies in Westminster that protect and enhance SSE’s external reputation and support business goals. By monitoring political and public policy developments from BEIS, Westminster and from other stakeholders you will be able to provide timely and considered advice to business leaders. You will lead the businesses relationships in Westminster by establishing, developing, co-ordinating and maintaining relationships with key Parliamentarians, researchers, civil servants and other relevant stakeholders.
We would like our ideal candidate to have a broad understanding of public affairs/external relations strategies gained by significant experience in a comparative public affairs role and an ability to demonstrate the use of public affairs to achieve commercial outcomes. As this role potentially affects the efficient operation, and ability to meet the business goals of, the total SSE business we would like a candidate who has a wide understanding of the business areas that SSE operates in, as well as knowledge of the company’s position relative to competitors and the wider context of the UK energy industry.
You will possess first-class strategic thinking ability, strong inter-personal and influencing skills combined with a proactive approach to work and excellent verbal, presentation and written communication capabilities. An understanding of the GB energy market is desirable but not a requirement, instead we are seeking a professional who wants to make a difference and has a fascination for the interplay between business and politics.
If you want to make a difference in a high profile company working on complex public policy areas, this role offers excellent opportunities for personal and professional development.
We can offer you a competitive salary package in a position which has excellent routes for career progression within the SSE Group. You will also enjoy an attractive benefits package, including pension, share plans, a generous leave entitlement (with options to purchase additional leave), reductions on energy, phone and broadband bills, plus a host of other rewards and lifestyle benefits.
As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome applications from everyone, and value diversity in our workforce. We will consider part time and/or flexible working arrangements for this role. This role is open to internal and external candidates.
