The procurement team is located through the UK, servicing customers across multiple business units and multiple locations and due to internal movement we are now looking for a Lead Category Manager to join our team based in Glasgow, Perth or Reading.
The Lead Category Manager is responsible for the execution of a category management approach to the procurement of a specified portfolio of spend to ensure compliance, drive efficiencies, mitigate supply risks and drive down the total cost of ownership to the organisation. The key categories of spend include gas works, services and goods.
They will be responsible for conducting internal and external analyses and engaging effectively with stakeholders including Procurement & Commercial Managers as appropriate to determine optimum sourcing strategies. They will lead others to provide a range of sourcing activities in support of category plans and in accordance with all policies and procedures. As well as this they will manage the relationship with suppliers and in-conjunction with Procurement & Commercial Managers/Project Managers coordinate monitoring of supplier performance and interface with the Business to understand demand for and the impact of sourcing activities. The Lead Category Manager will also liaise with the Head of Category Management on a regular basis to provide updates on category performance and provide additional insight through reporting and commentary as required.
We are expecting our ideal candidate to have good understanding of Category Management and its implementation gained from equivalent experience- ideally in a comparable industry- including gas utilities experience. We are looking for someone who has a proven track record in executing complex procurement activities along with a broad knowledge of contracts with ability to draft special terms, including dispute procedures. An understanding of relevant statutory and legal provisions is crucial as is being able to understand the supply chain and have a continuous improvement focus on how to improve it.
One of the personal skills we want to see from our ideal candidate is the ability to influence and negotiate with others using strategic thinking and well placed confidence to reach customer focused conclusions. A good team player would fit the profile perfectly. It’s vital that our ideal candidate has excellent communication skills across all mediums, which would typically be displayed in high standards in drafting and writing as well as being highly numerate. As you would expect for a role of this scale we need someone who has excellent organisation skills and is able to work in a project management framework where needed. Being strongly motivated, resilient with a strict ethical code is needed. Leading a team will be a core aspect of the role so previous Management experience is essential.
A CIPS qualification or equivalent degree level qualification is preferred but not essential. You will require a degree or an equivalent as direct entry to be recognised as an appropriate professional body. Knowledge of Procurement related systems e.g. Oracle, Emptoris, Achilles Utilities Vendor Database would be preferable for this role.
