The Service Availability Manager is responsible for the Meter Data Management System (MDMS) and through it the successful deployment of tariff, price and firmware management across more than 6 million SMETS1 and 2 smart assets. You’ll be the focal point for all firmware and asset event related activities in respect of resources, service and technical understanding, and you’ll need to ensure these are achieved cost effectively and with full transparency.

You’ll develop and maintain the framework for the remote management of metering assets, working with manufacturers and with end service providers ensuring operational effectiveness for SSE and its customers. Working collaboratively with a range of external bodies and internal service providers will be a key feature of this role, in particular in relation to release and environment management for new firmware or system changes.

The role will cover smart assets in both domestic and business settings and will be accountable for the on-going operation, for industry communication, that data is available for billing and settlements purposes confirm processes adhere to the Smart Energy Code (SEC) as well as internal Assurance requirements.

You should be an expert in the concepts and principles of remote firmware management for gas and electricity meters, Smart Energy Monitors and communications hubs, combined with a good operational understanding of the impacting Regulations. You should have in-depth knowledge of the utilities/metering business and/or Smart Meter Programme, and a good understanding of end-to-end remote asset lifecycle management and industry working practices for Service Requests, DCC interaction, Technical testing and Event management.

You should possess ITIL v3 Diploma or equivalent and continual improvement qualification such as Kaizen or Lean Six Sigma. It’s likely you will have developed and managed significant projects with a budget and timescale of over one year, and you’ll have a good level of awareness of Quality assurance processes and practices, and Industry standards such as ISO 20000 or ISO 27001.

You should be a strong leader with the ability to influence and coach others. You should display excellent interpersonal skills, be assertive, collaborative and demonstrate an ability to discuss issues and resolutions with staff at all levels within the Company.

A confident user of Microsoft Office applications. Well organised, analytical and methodical, you will be a good communicator, adaptable to changing priorities. You should have excellent planning skills and great problem solving ability. Moreover, you’ll demonstrate an ability to work well under pressure and to tight deadlines.
