At SSE, Safety is our number one priority. It's at the heart of everything we do. As a key member of the Wholesale Safety leadership team you will provide SHE input and direction for SSE Gas Storage in Hornsea.

SSE Hornsea Ltd (SSEHL), a division of SSE, operates two of the UK’s largest on-shore gas storage facilities on the East Yorkshire coast near Hornsea at Atwick and Aldbrough. The sites provide important natural gas storage and supply function for the UK. Gas is imported from the National Grid and compressed before being injected into man-made salt cavities located c.1 mile underground. When gas is required by customers, it is withdrawn from the caverns, dried to remove moisture absorbed whilst in the caverns before being fed back into the National Grid. The sites are upper-tier COMAH due to the inventories of natural gas stored.

Reporting to the Head of SHE Wholesale, this role will support Gas Storage in their endeavours to keep people, assets and the environment safe from harm. They will support the delivery of the Wholesale SHE Plan developing and implementing the associated Gas Storage SHE Plan.

Furthermore, you will build and maintain firm relationships with the Gas Storage Leadership Team and with key stakeholders including Regulatory Authorities, Industry Bodies, Contractor Management Teams and Site Operational Teams. You will also support the application of the Safety Family framework and its associated methods, as well as reinforcing positive and challenging negative behaviours against Safety Family values when observed.

To be successful in this role, you should hold a minimum of a degree level qualification in a relevant science / engineering subject with significant experience of COMAH regulated processes (preferably Upper Tier), legal requirements & industry best practice with several years of industry experience.  You will also be a chartered member of IOSH or willing to work towards this. Furthermore, you should have previous experience working within a high hazard industry (eg. Gas Storage, Power Generation, Offshore or Petrochemical industry). You will have up to date knowledge of Gas Storage SHE Local Work Instructions along with awareness of SHE regulations in the UK & Ireland.

You should be an excellent communicator with the ability to liaise with, and influence, key stakeholders at all levels. You will be a problem solver with the ability to address complex issues making them simple through a well structured systematic approach, understanding risks and implementing appropriate solutions. You should demonstrate a “can do” attitude and enjoy finding solutions to problems. Above all, you will demonstrate awareness of both personal and corporate safety practices.

Due to the level of mobility required in this role, a full UK driving licence is essential.
